Ok, so I'm gonna ask,

I've been fishing a lot for smallmouth these days and I find myself fishing primarily surface lures, which are producing really pretty well for me, I always get a few good fish.

But as some of you who fish the upper hous are aware, it's pretty darn low right now and even when the water is higher i'm afraid to fish with sub surface lures as they ALWAYS get tangled in rocks, logs, etc. you name it. Whenever I toss a roostertail or a jig or god forbid a tube or a diving lure, it almost always results in losing said lure.

So I'll pose the question here:

What am I doing wrong!? I love smallmouth fishing in the river, but hate losing lures!

Sevnseat, You are not doing anything wrong. Fishing a shallow river is alot like jig fishing.....if you're not getting caught up you're not casting to where they live! Smallies use rocks, logs, etc as a current break so that is where they're gonna be. If it is shallow enough to get caught can't you wade over to where you are snagged and undo it? If from shore sometimes walking upriver of the snag will sometimes loosen it. Also try fishing a little more weedless stuff like a t-rigged tube or a spinnerbait.

the old saying goes if your not getting hung up than you are ot fishing where the fish are!
