Penfield Reef-a night of bluefish explosions
Message:
Just got back from the reef with my son and got into lots of blues. After an hour or two of hardly anything-sea robins-I finally got into the fish as I was walking back along the reef, back towards shore and still fishing while walking, when I found the bluefish (and had one striper (mixed in with the blues) spit the lure at me). At one point I caught 8 blues within a half hour, many on the first cast! And they were hitting my minnow plugs hard!(most damage was done with a rapala flat rap, so hard I never switched to topwater since the minnows were working so good, they were hitting them and then exploding out of the water! Some hits were very close- one-about 2-3 ft away-I saw a blue follow my lure, hit it, and explode out of the water right in front of me! When I thought that was close a couple casts later when I was about to lift my lure out f the water, Bam!, a blue jumped up and grabbed that lure less than a foot or two from my face! Awesome! They weren't the biggest, around 18", some a couple inches bigger, can't wait for action like this when the bigger ones come back. All in all a great night at the reef, and my son is finally hooked on saltwater!

Sounds like a great time. A school of blues can make for some exciting fishing.
