Farmington River in Simsbury/Pickerel Cove
Message:
Went out last night with fellow poster AustinB in his Portaboat for a couple hours. We launched from Tarrifville park at around 645 with the goal of fishing Pickerel Cove. We knew it was going to be a coin toss with the low water levels, but we checked it out anyways. Long story short, the entrance to the cove was all dammed up with mud and branches. We were able to get over it, but the cove was all covered in scum. We tried fishing there for maybe 30 minutes, but no luck. We decided to just get back out on the river and let it float us down, which proved to be the best bet. We fished all the down structure along the sides of the river, catching a bunch of smallies, all on the smaller side. Also it wouldnt be a trip without a rockbass, and when we were going back i ended up getting one while trolling my helsinki shad SR-7 (my person favorite color in the SR series). Overall it was a fun night, smallies any size are aggressive and fun. The weather was beautiful as well. As far as pickerel cove goes, i'm guessing thats a better spot at the beginning of the season or towards the end, when the scum isn't as thick (also better when the water levels are higher). BTW Peco, i remember you couldn't come because you were at the sox game, what a game to catch!
