Topwater Taylors at the Reef 8/16
Message:
My dad and I hit the incoming at Penfield Reef starting around 6:45pm. Low for Bridgeport was scheduled for 5:10pm. I was the first to get out there and started off on the Bridgeport side with a purpledescent Flat Rap FLR-10. Had no luck and also tried casting on the Norwalk side. Water temps felt very warm like the upper 70s. Next lure was that olive green Cackin Minnow CNM-9 I was hitting the sea robins with last time. Tried doing that jerk and pause retrieve I was into last time but no fish. As it got closer to sunset I threw a spotter minnow Saltwater X-Rap SXR-10. Lost a small fish on the Norwalk side. Right around sunset a man I was fishing near said the fish were breaking. I look to where he was pointing and saw plenty of breaks on the surface. Put my chrome Skitter Pop SP-9 on and threw it out there. Was into them pretty soon. My dad was also into it when I called him over to the area, but he wasn't setting the hook like I was because he was using bigger topwaters. I landed a total of 6 taylors which ranged from 2 to 4 pounds. Had more explosions than hook sets and lost 3. Also saw a nice sized blue come jumping mouth first out of the water before diving mouth first back into the water. It was going for my Skitter Pop. My dad landed 2 and had many explosions and lost 1. His biggest was the catch of the night. 6 pound harbor cocktail blue. The bite lasted for about 30 minutes from sunset to last light. We were back on shore around 8:30pm. This was the best topwater action I've been into so far this season. The bait they were feeding on was peanuts. Water temps cooled down no more than 1 or 2 degrees from the time I got out there and the time we left.

BTW guys, There were some bigger fish out there close to 10 pounds. A fisherman was reeling in a 2 or 3 pound taylor and the taylor's rear half got bitten off. I could also tell that the blue that jumped for my Skitter Pop was an 8 pounder.
