HUGE PB for Rangerskid!
Message:
I'm not generally one to withhold information but today's report is going to be a "Lake X" type. The place itself is not a big secret or anything and I know some of you fish it, but I've seen many of the places I regularly fish this summer go from almost no pressure, to constant pressure. This is a place we fish fairly regularly and have only seen one other person fishing there once. With that said, if you live/fish in the area and want to know where it was I have no problem at all sharing via PM. This is a place where we have consistently caught cookie cutter bass and crappie but today was the first time we have pulled out a lunker. So Rangerskid (Kevin) and I went out at about 5:30PM tonight and were fishing the shoreline. I was throwing large topwater lures and he was throwing a hard plastic frog generally. After about 30 minutes I had gotten only 1 bite and Kevin had ventured far down the shoreline. Then I got into my first fish, it was the fattest, laziest 11" bass I have ever encountered. Judging by the size of its head, it has the potential to be an easy 6 lber. After the first catch, I moved down closer to Kevin so that we were in shouting distance. Turns out he had already caught a small LMB of his own. Just after that, Kevin caught his first crappie of the season. Luckily this would not be his most memorable fish of the day. There were some beavers swimming around which was fun to watch and then I hear Kevin yell that he had something and he thought it might be a beaver! He was wading in the water and at that point he jumped out to avoid an angry confrontation. I watched as he was yanking and pulling his pole, sure that if he had anything of decent size that his 8lb mono would not hold up in the heavy lily pads. Then I see him grab the net we always bring but never use and knew he had a nice fish. He yells in triumph and holds up the net. From afar it looked like a big bullhead (maybe I just have Bullhead on the brain). I dropped my pole and ran over to take a look for myself. When I got there I found this monster! [img:57d010f90f]http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/376701_10152035231360258_1289375929_n.jpg[/img:57d010f90f] I quickly measured it and it came out to 22.5". We each have different, non-digital scales and I weighed it on each. I know these are not always reliable but mine showed 5.5lbs and his showed just over 6lbs. I'm thinking this fish was closer to 6, if not more judging by its tremendous size and girth. I ended up catching one more small bass that was way out of his element hitting my massive popper before hitting the road at about 7:45pm. PS: I eagerly await the one person who will come in with a comment along the lines of "nice fish, but no way that is more than 3.2lbs"
