Uncas Pond 09/24

After a terrific meal and a great time at the Rustic Café, part two of the second day of Dirtydawg10's (aka Derek's) Birthday Weekend Fishing Bash was held at Uncas Pond. Once again, Derek paddled El Fuego, while I pedaled The Other Woman. We got on the water at the boat launch ramp on the west end of the pond at 4:40 pm: [img:1bec4abe08]http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9639/img3648cropped.jpg[/img:1bec4abe08] The air temperature was 65 degrees when we launched, but quickly fell into the 50s with the night. The battery on my fish finder was dead by then, so I have no idea what the water temperature was, although the water was gin clear as far as I could see in the fading light. We headed counterclockwise around the pond from the ramp, hitting the shallows along the shoreline with wacky Senkos. When we got to the floating dock in front of the first house on the south shore at 5:00 pm, my wacky rigged green pumpkin/red flake five inch Senko got me a 12 inch keeper largemouth bass: [img:1bec4abe08]http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/1096/img3649cropped.jpg[/img:1bec4abe08] I decided to pedal across to the north shore of the pond and work clockwise around it, because the north shore was already in the shadows, while Derek continued in a clockwise direction. At 5:30 pm, the wacky Senko got me a 16 inch, two pound, one ounce largemouth bass that was sitting tight to the shore in the super shallow water next to a shrubby laydown: [img:1bec4abe08]http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/756/img3650cropped.jpg[/img:1bec4abe08] Derek had flown around the pond and I passed him when I was only halfway to the east end of the pond along the north shore. He hadn't caught anything at that time. I didn't get much until after I had reached the east end of the pond and began trolling a Yellow Perch Rapala Jointed Shad Rap JSR05 and a Perch Rapala Jointed Shad Rap JSR07 off of the south shore and back toward the ramp. At 7:00 pm, what little wind there had been died completely and the water was like glass. I thought I saw a fish swirl up on a bug on the surface of the water in front of me, so I threw my wacky Senko at it. I let it sink for a few seconds before starting my retrieve. Although I hadn't seen any indication that a fish had picked up the Senko, I soon felt weight on the line. Fish on! :o I could tell that it was a decent fish and, after I saw that it was a largemouth bass, I had to scramble to figure out how to boat it between the two setups I had in my rod holders for trolling. Luckily, the largemouth bass in Uncas Pond are a lot less feisty than those in Rogers Lake and I was able to get it aboard: [img:1bec4abe08]http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1214/img3652cropped.jpg[/img:1bec4abe08] [img:1bec4abe08]http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/264/img3654cropped.jpg[/img:1bec4abe08] I thought that the solid 18 incher would weigh over three pounds for sure, but it weighed only two pounds, 10 ounces. :shock: And, yes, I weighed it twice on my digital scale. :roll: It didn't look like a skinny fish to me! :? Anyway, I trolled all the way back to the west end of the pond without a hit on my crankbaits. When I got to the ramp, although the moon shone bright in the sky, it was pitch black. I hit the remote start on my Jeep to turn on its lights and get my bearings. After I came ashore, Derek told me that he had boated a short largemouth bass before dark and a couple of 15 inchers after dark. I got off of the water around 7:40 pm, after a very long day of fishing. I'm already looking forward to Derek's Birthday Weekend Fishing Bash next year! Happy Birthday, Derek! :D

Thanks Phil! It was an awesome time of fishing as usual! I fished counterclockwise around the pond. I only threw the wacky senko the whole time there. I got a few small nibbles on the worm that never got a hook in their mouth. In fact I never caught a fish out there until after I passed Phil and it started getting dark. The first one I got was a shorty just about 200 yards from the launch. [img:d1e1c67b19]http://imageshack.us/a/img209/9898/dscf0016zq.jpg[/img:d1e1c67b19] I was starting to get cold in my t-shirt and not catching any fish so I decided to get off the water. I pulled my yak over to the launch and loaded up all my stuff on Phil's trailer. I looked out over the pond and saw Phil way down at the other end from the launch. I was standing there watching a few fish going after bugs on the surface and listening to some kids flirting with each other in the parking lot. I decided I couldn't just stand there any more. I grabbed a rod, my paddle and the yak and headed back out. I fished around the pads near the launch with a wacky senko where I had seen a few fish surface. Go figure I caught the biggest fish of the day while my camera was sitting on Phil's trailer. I measured the fish up to the marks on the butt of my fishing rod so I would at least know the length. I thought about going to get the camera since it wasn't far to the launch but I decided to just let the fish go. I started throwing the senko again and not more then five casts later I landed my new biggest fish of the day. I measured it up to my fishing rod again and it was 1/2" longer than the last one. I decided to paddle the short distance to the launch to get the camera and the Hawg Trough. It ended up being just short of a 16" bass (So officially a 15"). Hi, Oh-ooh! You guys finally discovered Uncas pond (Norwich Pond same area). Both are "No Motor ponds" When I lived in East Hampton I fished Uncas religiously because it is small, quiet/senic, stocked with trout, gets minimal fishing pressure, and has an exceptionally good Bass population (of good size) because of the presents of alewives. Sure you'll go back there again ! :D Nice looking and size fish you caught there -> Should have the same good experience at "Norwich Pond" :!: SeaDog1 :mrgreen:
