Spring Pond 09/29

I really wanted to go fishing today, but had to stick close to home because I had to schlep my daughter around in the middle of the day. At 9:45 am, JJay (aka Jason) texted me that he was going for a short paddle around Spring Pond, so I decided to join him after I dropped my daughter off at her event. I got on the water on the west shore of the south cove in The Other Woman at 11:50 am. The air was cool and there was a five mile per hour north wind blowing, I saw that Jason was all the way up in the northwest corner of the pond, but decided to fish the south cove before heading up there. The water was murky; I could see down less than a foot. It was also cold; the temperature ranged from 60 degrees to 62 degrees. The water was also way shallower than normal. It was 22 inches lower than the high water mark on this rock:

I texted Jason that it looked like spinnerbait or buzzbait water, but when I saw a fish splash on the surface, I tied on a Frog Hula Popper, instead. I worked my way counterclockwise around the south cove, but didn't get any hits. I tried a small black buzzbait in order to cover more water, but got nada. When I got to the south end of the east shore, I tried throwing a wacky rigged green pumpkin/red flake five inch Senko at the shore and some laydowns, but didn't get even a nibble. As I headed up the east shore, I decided to finally tie on a small white Strike King Redeye spinnerbait. As I was tying it on, a fish splashed on the surface only 10 feet away from me in four feet of water in the middle of the cove. I quickly finished tying on the spinnerbait and threw it at the splash. It was hit immediately:

Whoo hoo! It was nice to see that there were still decent largemouth bass in the pond, despite the constant pressure from the bucket brigade. I decided to head up to the north end of the pond, so I tied on a Yellow Perch Rapala Jointed Shad Rap JSR05 and a Perch Repala Jointed Shad Rap JSR07, and headed up between the south island and the east shore. I didn't get any hits on the Rapalas, I saw a splash in the shallows in the middle of the pond and tried throwing the wacky Senko among the beds of weeds, but didn't get any hits. I resumed trolling up the west shore and past the north island toward where the stream flows into the pond in the northwest corner of the pond. I got nothing. The black buzzbait over the weeds in the shallows got nothing, too. Jason paddled up in his Future Beach Trophy 126 DLX. He hadn't gotten anything, yet. I decided to troll the Rapalas back down the west shore and Jason followed. When I approached the south island, the Yellow Perch JSR05 was hit by a short largemouth bass:

Jason headed around the south island and was fishing off of its south shore when I heard him yell, "I got one!" I pedaled around the island to see him trying to remove the hook from a really nice largemouth bass with pliers. I gave him my hemostats to use, instead, and, after the hook was out, I gave him my Hawg Trough to measure the fish:

It was a solid 19 inches long and weighed three pounds, five ounces. We weighed it on each of our digital scales to check them. My Berkley scale and Jason's Field & Stream scale got the same reading. I decided to see whether the black crappie were biting, so I tied on my crappie rig, which is a 1/16 ounce round jighead with a Pearl Silver 2-1/2 inch Gulp! Minnow. I got a few nibbles right away, but it took a while before I finally boated a bluegill with it:

Jason and I each wandered around the north end of the pond, but neither of us got anything. When we decided to head back in, I tied on the Rapalas and trolled them down the west shore. When I got next to the south island, I stopped and was reeling in the Yellow Perch JSR05 to check it for weeds when I felt it get hit by a decent fish:

The largemouth bass was 17 inches long and weighed two pounds, six ounces. Yes, it was a little bit skinny and a little bit pale, and it had quite a bit of black splotch. We headed off of the water 15 minutes later, at 4:30 pm. Thanks for suggesting Spring Pond, Jason. And congrats on the nice fish!
