Penfield Reef Are Kayaking 10/8
Message:
Member GKolyagin (Genna) recently got a kayak and had everything setup this weekend so we headed out to South Benson to launch and hit areas from the Reef to the channel. Launched around 1pm.
Once we got out into the open, Genna trolled with a T&W while I trolled with a purpledescent Shallow Shad Rap SSR-9.
As we made our way to the Reef, Genna would occasionally get a hit and was also getting robbed. I landed close to or even over 10 sea robins with 2 of them being monsters that pulled like a bluefish.
Genna switched over to a glass ghost Saltwater X-Rap SXR-10 and casted and trolled. He ended up getting about 5 sea robins.
Later as we headed towards the channel and wrecks off of Jennings Beach and St Mary's, Genna noticed breaks on the surface. He threw a popper out there and pretty soon caught a bluefish. I switched over to a chrome Skitter Pop SP-9. Genna got 3 taylors and I got 2 taylors and 2 schoolies. Both schoolies were about 20" and were chubby, making me think about 6 pounds.
Genna was marking lots of bait throughout the water column while we were into the topwater. Within 30 minutes, the fish left even with all the bait still around. Genna tried jigging with a 1oz white bucktail rigged with a white pork rind but didn't have any luck.
Headed back into South Benson around 5:30pm.
Both of us were happy to be able to fish in the open on our vessels.

Are those sea kayaks or is it generally calm enough there to use a standard kayak?
