Pickerel Day at Twin Brooks
Message:
Hit Twin Brooks again Friday hoping for a good topwater bite with the purpledescent Shallow Shad Rap SSR-7. Arrived around 3:45pm and first stop was where I was catching lots of those perch and pickerel back in February. Played topwater and also tried a slow steady retrieve with the SSR-7. Had 1 hit on the surface with it but never saw anything else. Also tried throwing a perch Jointed J-7 but nothing. Headed over to the southern edge of the pond with the gazebo where I continued with the SSR-7. 2 areas I hit at the southern edge produced 1 largemouth and 3 pickerel. Largemouth was under a pound and the pickerel ranged from 13" to 15". Had a a few other hits on the surface with them being a mix of bass and pickerel. Saw it was around 4:30pm so I decided to head over to the cove at the larger pond where 2 brooks feed in. Nothing on the surface this time. Headed over to my November hot spot with the SSR-7. Caught 2 more pickerel with 1 being a chubby 17" 1 pound 7 ounce healthy fish. Had a largemouth jump out for the SSR-7 on the surface and missed out on what was probably the same pickerel I caught before catching it in the same area. Once things calmed down at the November hot spot I headed over to the point are the larger pond. Missed out on a pickerel there and had 1 tap on the surface. Went to the small hidden pond but nothing. Last stop was the bend along the Pequonnock where the brook from the larger pond and small hidden pond feeds in. Caught a chubby 13" 1 pound largemouth. Hit the road around 5:40pm. Best day I've had at Twin Brooks in a while! I love getting into the fun and aggression of pickerel, esp topwater. Turned out to be a pretty good day for under 2 hours of fishing!

Pickerel are becoming one of my favorite fish to catch. I love catching Pike, but Pickerel put up a much better, and fun fight. Nice work!

I find local pickerel places that don't have much size to the fish to be fun with a light action setup, esp for the fight you get.
