Seaside Schoolies 11/17

After taking a break from fishing and getting plenty of extra sleep yesterday, I headed back down to Seaside Park Saturday. Arrived at the Fayerweather Island jetty just after 12pm. High tide for Bridgeport was scheduled for 1:32pm. Conditions when I got there were better than Thursday. NE winds around 5mph, sunny skies, and temps staying around 50 with enough moisture as the sun stayed strong. Lures I played around with as the tide was coming in included shiner Shallow Shad Rap SSR-9, original pearl shad Flat Rap FLR-10, silver Clackin Minnow CNM-11, flake purple ghost Max Rap MXR-15, spotted minnow Saltwater X-Rap SXR-10, and purple gold Clackin Rap CNR-7. Had 1 hit right in front of me on the Clackin Minnow and had 2 other hits and landed a 14" schoolie on the Flat Rap. As high tide got closer, I saw birds working a school. They weren't within casting range even for a heavy pencil popper. The birds would work the school for about 5 minutes before stopping and then 5 minutes later the school would pop up again in a different location but in the same area. I decided to head over to the cannon seeing it was peak high tide. When I got over there I saw 2 usuals who have also been hitting the schoolies recently. Both were throwing 4" pearl white shads with 1 ounce jigheads. The 3 of us worked the out going tide from the cannon to the sharp bend along the point. One of the usuals was on a roll with getting hits and landing fish. He landed a total of 7 with 2 coming on a 5" black jointed plug. I got close to 10 hits, lost 3 fish, and landed 3 all with the Flat Rap. The other usual landed 4 stripers with 2 coming on an umbrella rig designed as a school of shad. All stripers between the 3 of us ranged from 12" to 18" As sunset got closer and the tide was almost halfway out, things started to slow down. The usuals gave up about 10 minutes before I called it a day around 4:45pm.

Alabama rigging at seaside?!

Saw him throw a rig designed to look like a school of 4 to 8 baitfish swimming together. All were 4" pearl white soft plastic shads. He said it was an umbrella rig.
