Beat the Skunk

Buddy had limited time today so we decided to jig at Black Rock Pond. When we arrived around 9am, it looked like people had already gone out on the ice. To be safe, I carefully put pressure with my foot on the ice near the shore. That was fine. Then we drilled a hole near shore and found 4 inches of ice. We kept on drilling holes as we jigged, starting from near the marshy coves and up towards the dam near Route 6. We didn't use a fishfinder but could tell from how much line was down we were jigging in depths ranging from 4 to 8 feet. Ice thickness in most areas was 5 to 6 inches with 2 inches of white on top of 3 or 4 inches of black. I stuck with a pearl Jigging Shad Rap WSR-3 while buddy played around with a chrome blue Jigging Rap W-2 and gold Kastmaster. Between the 2 of us, I was the only one to have a hit which was a 6" yellow perch that I landed. Buddy never had anything rob him while using mealies on his Kastmaster. Before leaving, buddy decided to get a tiny pink jigging lure and rig it with a mealie but no hits on that either. Hit the road around 12:15pm.

Getting anything out of there without a fish finder is pure luck. BTW it seems gold/orange is usually the most productive there.
