Ct river in Hartford. don't bring bananas in the boat!
Message:
I wasn't going to post at all after a not very good day but after texting a few fishing bud's and they responding with "you're cursed!" I figure I might as well tell yet another story that could only happen to me! originally I wasn't going to go as the wind forecast was supposed to be 10-15 mph but when I got up, they had reduced it to less than 8 mph for the Hartford area. I truly believe the fishing Gods did this to entice me out on the water so they could mess with me some more! I decided to see if I could find some hold over stripers as I had gotten reports of a few in the discharge area as well as a couple being caught in Weathersfield cove. Here in Western Mass, there was very little wind and the sun was shining so I said "what the heck, I'll give it a shot". I loaded up the Allison ( the jet boat is in the shop) and of course I had to take 2 bananas with me, cause I would never tempt the fishing Gods! Charlie and I got to the East Hartford ramp at around 10 this morning, we were the only ones there. the water has been steadily dropping but there was still quite alot of current going over the ramp. When you are by yourself, you gotta back the trailer in just right so as to not have it come off the trailer until I climb over the truck, then climb down onto the trailer and push it off the trailer. well I did that part perfectly and we headed out to the river without incident. We got to the discharge area and it was barren. we tried to go in and the entrance was blocked by a huge brush pile! we fished around without a bite and then headed to Weathersfield cove to check it out. there were 3 other boats in there and no one was getting anything. We then headed down to a deep catfish hole that is usually loaded this time of year. In fact, last year this time, we got almost 100 up to 9 lbs out of this hole! Not today, it was empty! WTF?? The wind never died down but my boy was a trooper, he stayed warm and just played on his Ipod while Dad was searching for something. Well I called it a day at 1 p.m. and we headed back to the ramp. This is where the report should end. A no fish day, nothing happened, time to go get some hot lunch, end of story type of story but not when the Gary curse is involved! We pulled up on the sand/mud bank and I got out of the boat. I took the tie rope with me and was on my way to tying up to a root when I slipped and went face first into the mud! Ice Armour suit was covered, hands and left cheek also! Charlie starts laughing! I don't blame him! Next I back the trailer in the water and when I was driving it on, I went up and over the fender sideways and crushed it! I power backed it off the trailer and got it the second time! I then climbed out of the boat and onto the trailer. I winch up the boat and am standing on my tail gate. i have a cap and the truck was in the water. I normally grab the canoe rack and walk around the side of the truck by putting my foot on the tire and then pivoting onto dry land. Well that is how it is supposed to work. Today however, I slipped on the tail gate with my mud covered shoes and went right in the knee deep water!! BRRRR...F-in cold!!! So that's it, no fish and the Gods got their laugh anyways. that reminds me, I need to go get the bananas out of the boat!
