fish or salamander?!?!?

a friend of mine hooked up to this in the ct river the other day on a nightcrawler! I did some research on it, to me it looks like a mudpuppy possibly? just wanted some second opinions or confirmation on the salamander, thanks in advance! ps- it was a foot or so long

Ya thats a mudpuppy we used to catch them a lot last year.
