Lower Bolton 5/03

After a long day of work I was heading back towards Uconn. It was getting near dusk and I wanted to fish. I decided that instead of just fishing on campus I would hit Lower Bolton and try for some catfish and possible topwater bass. I arrived at about 8pm and there were maybe 6 other people in the ramp area. I found my own little area and set up. I got these catfish dough balls for Christmas and finally tested them out. I started off with one setup with the dough ball sitting on the bottom, another with a jitterbug, and another with a tube. After maybe 5-10 minutes I reeled the dough ball in and re-casted. i had the jitterbug going when my other line started running. I tried to set the hook but was too late. I was pretty surprised that the bait would work at all but was pleased. A little while later, I had a tiny fish on the tube but lost it. Then maybe 5 minutes after that, I hooked and landed an 11" largemouth. At this point I went to 2 lines with catfish bait in the water and attached bobbers to both lines as I kept hooking some weeds. I was sitting around another 25 minutes or so, thinking I missed my chance when one of my poles was nearly yakned into the water. I put on a big hook set and was successfully able to land my first ever channel catfish. It was about 22-24" but pretty skinny. Definitely a fun fish to catch. Another 30 minutes later with no more bites I hit the road at like 10:30. While I was there, a variety of cat-fishermen on the ramp, using chicken I believe, must have caught at least 15. I was badly outfished but still had a good night.

( I never did make it to glastonbury but hit lower bolton instead ) was that you cat-fishing last night? I stopped to chat with you for a second after I caught some pan fish - I was toting a white bucket and told you about the spot off of 384 glad to hear you caught your first Catfish

Nice meeting you. I almost asked if you were from the site. Yeah I got my first one it was pretty sweet.
