Spring Pond 05/08

JJay (aka Jason) has become a topwater frog addict and was jonesing for a fix :lol: , so we fished Spring Pond from the shore after he got out from work. He got there before I and fished from the culvert on the west shore of the south cove down to the southwest corner of the pond, but didn't catch anything. He threw a Stanley Ribbit in Catalpa, I think. When I arrived at 5:30 pm, we walked up the path along the west shore to the cove to the west of the north island. While Jason tried fishing from the shore on the south end of the cove, I went to the center of the cove and waded in. Yeap, it's good to have boot foot chest waders when you're fishing in the shallows. :D The water in the cove is [i:ec07879649][b:ec07879649]very[/b:ec07879649][/i:ec07879649] shallow next to the shore. It's less than a foot deep to about 20 feet from the water's edge. The weedline doesn't begin until the bottom suddenly drops to deeper water. I threw a small bone popper to the inside edge of the weedline and quickly got a hit: [img:ec07879649]http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7363/img5552cropped.jpg[/img:ec07879649] Whoo Hoo! :D I didn't have any way to measure its length, but since it weighed two pounds, nine ounces, I'd bet that it was 17 inches long. Since I left my cellphone in my Jeep, I have to thank Jason for the photos. I was especially glad that I didn't have my cellphone with me when I waded back to the shore to swap out the popper for a buzzbait and one of my boots got stuck in the thick mud near the shore. I lost my balance and fell to my knees. :shock: Luckily, the water didn't go higher than my chest, so I stayed dry except for my left arm halfway up to my elbow. :) Jason had walked up the path to the center of the cove to take the photo of me with my fish. He was wearing waterproof Bog muck boots, so he was able to carefully wade out about 15 feet from the shore. He got a hit on his frog and landed a small keeper largemouth bass. He didn't send me that photo, so, hopefully, he'll post it. I didn't get any hits on the buzzbait, so I swapped it out for a Bullfrog Zoom Horny Toad on a Number 4 Gamakatsu Offset Shank Worm EWG (i.e., Extra Wide Gap) Hook. After we thoroughly covered the entire weedbed in the cove with our frogs, we headed back to the shore and walked up the path to the shallows in the northwest corner of the pond. Jason did, however, set the hook on a largemouth bass after it had hit his frog on four casts! :shock: I watched him reel it in to his feet, before it somehow spit the hook. :? After that, I saw Jason get just one more small hit on his frog, while I didn't get any. :x At 8:00 pm, when darkness started to fall and we were thinking about leaving, I decided to wacky rig a Black/Blue Flake five inch Senko on my big EWG hook and try to catch the largemouth bass I know sits in the mouth of the creek that enters the pond through a culvert in the northwest corner. While I enjoyed finally using the waders that have hung unused in my garage for years, I still think that shore fishing isn't for me. The next time that I go to Spring Pond, I'll bring my kayak. :D

Um Phil, Im pretty sure I remember uou saying we shore casters had it too hard and now I see you wearing a pair of waders!!! This conversion is happening very quickly! Next Ill see you in the winter striper fishing with me with frozen guides! LOL
