Naugatuck River 5/13
Message:
I went down to the Naugy from 3:30 - 5:30 today to see if anything would be biting. I threw a gold and silver phoebe as usual.
It was a rather slowish day but I did manage to catch 1 small SMB, and 2 fall fish. I lost a nice, estimated 2lb smallie :x As soon as he hit and made a run, I knew it was going to be a nice fish. He took a jump about 5 feet in front of me and spit the hook. I also managed to spook a nice size salmon as I was wading through the river....it's the first time I've come across one in the Seymour stretch.
Does anyone know if it is eel breeding season? I nearly stepped on a group of about 6 of them and it scared the bejesus out of me. They were all over the place! I noticed a lot of "beds" in the middle of the river and saw them hanging out by or in them. They put me on edge the rest of the day in fear I would step on them and they would attack me like snakes on a plane

Now that I've looked into the eel species of the river....could it be a possibility that these "eels" were actually big sea lampreys? They did seem to almost stick to the rocks now that I think of it. I wish I could've snapped some pics but I didn't want to get anywhere close to those things.

I don't know if sea lampreys are common around here, but its funny that you thought of them because I just watched the newest epsiode of River Monsters where Jeremy Wade gets bitten by two lampreys. Very weird fish. I wouldn't get anywhere near them.
