Fished the Helcat on 5/18/13
Message:
Myself and two friends decided to head out on the Helcat's first voyage of the season on Saturday. We were hoping to hook up with stripers before the big rush of blue fish came in.
Well I was not sure of what to expect, since I have read reports here saying that the Race was void of fish. However I had also heard that things were picking up this past week.
Well we got to the boat at 8am and the Helcat was half full already. So we pick our spot and the boat continues to fill up. A group of 25+ Boy Scouts from NJ were on the boat also. Many of them had never even fished before.. Of course they sit right next to me.
I overhear the captain telling one of the parents of a scout that he plans to head over to Greenport NY where the blues are biting.. UGH.... I wanted to avoid the blues.. Oh well..
Well we head out with a full boat and head to the Race. The captain takes 3 drifts and after no one catches a fish he decided to continue to head towards Greenport.
It took us a little over an hour to get there. There were a couple of boats fishing the are including the Brooklyn Girl 2. and a nice boat with 3 beautiful woman in tank tops until their boyfriends saw a bunch of guys(half the Helcat) gawking at them during the drifts. Then their sweatshirts and jackets went on. smirk
Most of the patrons on the Helcat were fishing with baited rigs. My buddies and I fished with diamond jigs. I was able to get two decent sized blues and one smaller one. I used an Atom jig with a white surgical tube. One of my buddies used a diamond jig with no trailer and he caught two big blues and a small sea bass.
We fished for about 1 and 1/2 hours before it was time to head in. More time was spent getting to the location and back, then there was fishing. Well my buddy won the pool with a big blue. I only saw about 12 blues and about 6 fluke in all caught from the entire boat. I do not think any of the Boy Scouts caught anything. Too bad because they were a good group of kids and were well behaved on the boat. I think the only people catching were using diamond jigs or small buck tails.
Overall a fun day with my pals and it got me craving for more fish and continuing to strive to catch a keeper striper.

I used to go on that boat several times a year. Had some fun on there with big bluefish; never had much luck with bass on there. The nighttime "Alligator Ledge" trips for ocean bluefish were always my favorite. Went home with very sore arms many times from that boat!

Yeah this was the lowest amount of fish I ever caught on the Helcat.
Still a great time.
I am thinking of trying the Middlebank for some fluke fishing next.
