Highland Lake 6/9

What a difference a week and a storm can do. Last Sunday (water temps 72) at Highland we pulled in a total of 25 Keeper Bass between three rods. Winchester caught the brunt of this weeks storms. Today (Water Temps 62/65) we fished a small club event. Started at 6am with 7 boats and three non boaters. Everyone caught something. I started with my top water spook in a small bay. Just wasn't feeling it after about a dozen casts so I switched to a whacky rigged Senko Watermelon/Red Flake. Three casts and I hook up with a 12" keeper. Ok so they want the WR Senko's again. Fished every rock and dock I could find for the next hour and couldn't hook up. Then went into 2nd bay. Picked up a two pounder there. My non boater picked up two so I'm thinking we're in a spot now. Next hour notta. Move to first bay. Pick up a couple keepers there. I tallied up with 5 Keepers, 2 Culls and four releases for the day with a total weight of 6.9Lbs. My partner came back with 4 and 4.6lbs for the day. All the other boats came back with fish. The largest bag at 9.6lbs. 2nd at 8.2lbs. Everyone else with 3/5 fish each. We're weighing in the fish and everyone is talking about how well the WR Senkos saved the day. Nothing else worked. I asked why everyone chose then, they replied "We saw Gary give you two bags before we started." So the moral of the story is, if you want to keep a technique a secret till after the event don't expose your ware prior to!" LOL. Over all great day to be on the water. Boat traffic was light for a change. Great day to be on the water winning or not. We've all seen 2lb fish so I didn't bother with picts. Off to Candy next. Hoping for the big ones there. I know exactly where to WR there. Till next time Tight Lines To Everyone.

I live on Highland and still haven't fished it. The water temps you posted are lower than I expected, Temps at McD are close to 70 in the main lake and 71 in the shallower coves(6/10 mid day). Once my son is out of school, We'll hit it during the week. Thanks for the report.

Highland is a great place to fish when there's minimal pleasure boat pressure. The lake always presents a challenge and is a good lake to learn on. Weekends can be tough except for early morning or dusk. There have been some really big Trout, Bass and Pickerel caught there. If your taking any type of power boat I highly recommend stopping 100' from shore and trolling in. There are some serious potatoes 12" under the surface just waiting for a virgin hull, prop or lower unit. If I'm not mistaken there is a minimum size for Bass of 16." Just keep that in mind if you live well any. Highland is one of the few lakes the DEEP have surprised us on. Never really had good luck with top water there but Senko's rigged Texas or Whacky have always produced well for me there. At dusk large black spinner baits with gold Colorado blades work well.
