Race and Plum Gut 6/22

Spent the day on my friend's boat yesterday from about 11am to 5pm. The tide was RIDICULOUS, and we were having a horrible time holding bottom. In hindsight, he should have been tempering the drift by engaging the engines, but that didn't happen. When the tide was in full flow, we weren't able to hold bottom with 34oz of weight, making fishing nearly impossible. We left from the race at about 2pm and headed to Plum gut, and started with trolling umbrella rigs and snapping butterfly jigs. The umbrella picked up a couple of scrappy blues, but no linesides. Switched it up to drifting live eels and bucktail jigs off the bottom and picked up 3 small stripers and 1 32" keeper that was released to fight another day. All in all, despite all the hype around this weekend I would prefer a 3 knot drift over the 8 knot drift we had yesterday. Maybe the fish were in a feeding frenzy at the bottom, but when you can't get a bait down there it doesn't do any good. Hopefully next week will be better! Plan on going out for my first ever trip into the sound on my own boat and trying Long Sand Shoal and Hens and Chickens.

Nice report. I ended up fishing the tail end of the flood as the rips were too strong early on.

Tail end of the flood on fri night was productive at the race. Two buddies and I caught 4 keepers biggest at 39 inches on live eels. After sunset the drift slowed down to 2.5 and we caught all the fish in a half hour.
