Crane, Hens, and Cornfield

Fished Hens & Chickens, Crane Reef, and Cornfield Pt Shoal Saturday. High tide was 8:44am, got there around 9:30 and fished until about 2:00. Weather was mild, and a little breezy. The current was not too strong, and drift was between 1.5 and 2.5 mph.
We fished live, fresh chunk, and frozen chunk bunker on 3 way rigs drifting over the reefs between 40 and 10 ft. We spent the first 2 hours at Hens & Chickens and the rest of the time at Cornfield without so much as a mark on the finder. Not 1 blue or bass to be had.
I’m starting to get really frustrated trying to learn the sound. I’ve been fishing the river for years, but the sound is just baffling me. The weekend before, I was convinced we didn’t see fish because we missed the tide, but this weekend we hit it on the nose and still had no results.
I bought a bigger boat and all new rods, reels and tackle specifically so I could fish the sound, and I’m really starting to think it was a waste of money. If anyone has any tips they could provide, it would be greatly appreciated…

It's been a tough year to start out due to all of the changing conditions and atypical patterns. The fish are there, but have been harder to find at times. The places you mentioned are usually choking with fish, increasingly blues, by now. I was on Bartlett's Thursday, and not a whiff. The outer rips are full (Plum Gut, Pidgeon). Tides are tricky as well. Keeping records of conditions when you find fish is extremely helpful. What type of boat did you get, and where do you usually launch? This certainly determines tactics. With a little more info, hopefully I or some others might be able to give you some ideas.

It has been a tough year to say the least. Even getting bait has been a challenge. I have a few friends who seem to be doing better at night from 9pm till midnight with eels.i only night fished once this year in June at the race we had a great night.
