Sharks in the housy?
Message:
I'm reading on my stripers online account someone ran into a bull shark in the upper part of the river. Wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

That could be VERY POSSIBLE! They have been reported as far north as Cape Cod in past years. As well as the Housatonic river near the Merrit parkway about 10 years ago. they do enter fresh water and if it was in search of food then,it could have been there.they usually are found in warm waters and with the warm water we had/have this year.....I wouldn't rule it out!
It could also have been a Sand Tiger Shark.
I was out in my kayak a few years ago in the CT river and just before dawn,as the tide was going out had a Sand Tiger Shark go right under my 9.6 foot kayak. The shark was about 2 feet longer than it.I was right under the RR bridge in Old Lyme.Much farther down river but i have heard someone on this site report catching one near the Goodspeed opera house that was 4-5 feet in length.
Last year there were reports of huge sturgon going up the Housatonic.1 report came from Bonds dock in Stratford.
I saw a map a few weeks ago on TV.
Other than the tip of Africa.being # 1...Southern New England is the #2 largest concentration of sharks in the world.Bull,Blue,Sand Tiger,Thresher,Great White and .......Mako being the most numerous.
I recall someone catching a 5-6 foot thresher shark at night on a bunker chunk last year out by Charles Island.
