Topwater Blitz!!!!!!
Message:
Low tide for Black Rock Harbor was scheduled for 2:11pm Monday and decided to try something new. Arrived at the parking lot by West Beach and the Fayerwaether jetty with my waders on just after 1pm. Setup was 7 foot MH Daiwa Procyon/PENN Pursuit 3000/Sufix 10 lb Tritanium Plus.
First I started at the sandy flats along West Beach. Lures I tried throwing included silver blue Skitter Pop SP-9, original pearl shad Flat Rap FLR-10, albino Storm Jointed Minnow Stick, flake blue Max Rap MXR-13, custom painted threadfin shad Max Rap MXR-11, and a 3/4 ounce chartreuse bucktail. Lost what a local surfcaster said was probably a weakfish. That was with the FLR-10. Fish was pulling hard but not taking line out. Felt tight head shaking similar to fluke but not as tight.
Once tide got right near low, I headed over to the spot on the Black Rock Harbor side of the Fayerweather jetty that has been getting me the schoolies recently. I was able to wade out there.
4 lures I played with included the MXR-13, FLR-10, SP-9, and a shad Shallow Shad Rap SSR-9. Lost a blue on the SP-9 and landed 4 sea robins with the FLR-10.
The bite died in Black Rock Harbor so seeing the tide was coming in I decided to head back over to the sandy flats and stick with the SP-9 and FLR-10.
While casting with the FLR-10 I see a pod of bunker on the surface. All of a sudden it turned into a blitz!
Right away switched over to a silver SP-9 and followed the school. Landed 2 big tailors. Both gave me a great fight and put on a show like those tarpon do down south and smallies do up here.
The blues kept chasing the bunker towards the east and then eventually disappeared. After that I had no more luck.
Hit the road around 5:45pm.
Brought both home and measured and weighed both of them. One measured 28" and weighed 7 pounds 14 ounces. The other was 25" 5 pounds 10 ounces.
Retrieve that had the blues going was a hard jerk causing a loud popping sound every 1 1/2 to 2 seconds. Even though they were feeding on adult bunker, I wasn't sure if a bigger 5" pencil popper would have made a difference. Once got into a fall blitz with a SSP-9 at West Haven while others with their bigger Creek Chubs and Cordells weren't getting much.
