Best Topwater Bite this Season
Message:
Seeing low tide for Black Rock Harbor was scheduled for 2pm Tuesday, I decided to do what I had been doing a week or 2 ago. Arrived at the parking lot around 1:30pm and walked out to the usual spot with my waders on.
Seeing the winds were light a variable and skies were partly cloudy, I had a feeling there was gonna be a topwater bite. Threw the silver blue SP-9 out there and on the third cast I get a nice explosion. Took 1 short run on me and ended up landing a chubby 20" striper. After that I never got any more explosions or swirls.
3 plugs I played with were flake blue Max Rap MXR-13, pearl grey shiner FLR-10, and tennessee olive shad Clackin Minnow CNM-9. Had a sea robin follow the MXR-13 and landed a total of 4, with 1 on the MXR-13 and 3 on the CNM-9.
Once it was the turn of the tide I tried hitting 2 other spots along the jetty and out by the island. Had 1 huge swirl when I went to take the MXR-13 out of the water while fishing a rocky area.
Was at the city boat ramp by 3:30pm and water was mostly flat. Started with the FLR-10 but wasn't getting any hits. Switched over to the SP-9 and I was into those schoolies in no time!
Kept on getting tons of explosions and landing a number as the afternoon went on. Once it was after 5pm, I was hardly getting anymore swirls and explosions. Tried throwing the FLR-10 and MXR-13 but didn't have any luck. 2 surfcasters I know came and they were hitting the small 12 to 14" schoolies with soft plastics closer to the bottom.
Total was over 10 schoolies up to 16" other than that 20"er.
Hit the road around 6:30pm
