Surf casting baits

I haven't been surf casting since I was a kid what is better bait to use swim baits poppers or live bait looking to go in the Madison,Clinton, old saybrook area any suggestions on where to go also would help thanks

You can never go wrong with bait, chunking with bunker works good, I am assuming you are gonna fish for stripers, if that is the case cut the head off a bunker and throw it on the hook, you wont regret that decision.

As far as throwing lures goes swim baits will typically do better but there is nothing better then hooking up with top water!!!! It really depends on what time of day though and water conditions. Right at Dawn and Dusk is a great time to throw top water or when the current is dead and its late at night a top water Spook works great!
