October November Pattern

After getting home around 6pm from an afternoon on the water in Jeff's new boat, I headed down to the city boat ramp after hearing word from a local surf casting buddy. Arrived at the boat ramp around 6:45pm and fished til 8:30pm. Setup was the same as last time. Saw the buddy and his mate out on their kayaks hitting stripers up to a 32" keeper all with topwater while I was casting with 2 other guys there. Another local surf caster came later. 2 lures the stripers were hitting were the shad SP-9 and chartreuse ghost XRW-9. No interest was showed in any FLR-10 I threw. Another surf caster was slamming them with a 4" Yo Zuri F popper while the other one wasn't doing well with a bigger 6" pencil popper. The guy who came later was hitting the stripers not just on topwater but with a 5" school bus yellow Red Fin worked slowly on the surface. My total was 5 up to 22" with lots of swirls and explosions. Would have caught more if a clump of seaweed didn't get caught in my braided line causing a huge birds nest. Black Rock Harbor is currently murky and weedy. Once it was after last light the bite died. Guys were telling me the reason why the stripers are only hitting surface lures and small size is because the basic bait in Black Rock Harbor right now is small shrimp right near the surface. This is very similar to October and November 2013 when I was slamming the schoolies on topwater and water temps were in the lower 50s. Gonna be back to the city boat ramp late Tuesday afternoon and fish til dark. It's not a matter of tide; it's a matter of time.
