Bantam River and Little Pond 07/12
Message:
JJay (aka Jason) and I paddled up Bantam River to Little Pond from the canoe launch on Whites Wood Road. We were on the water from 9:45 am to 4:00 pm. The pond is silting up and choked with weeds. The lily pads are even starting to get covered with them. The river that flows past the golf course and into the pond is clear of weeds, but it's full of sand. I wouldn't be surprised if the pond is totally gone in the very near future. Fishing-wise, we didn't catch any fish in the pond. We did catch fish in the river that flows into the pond, although they were all one pounders. However, the fishing in the river between the pond and Whites Wood Road was terrific, despite heavy kayak and canoe traffic. We caught about 20 largemouth bass and three chain pickerel. The lunker largemouth bass was three pounds, 11 ounces. They were hitting Zoom Horny Toads and wacky Senkos. Here's Jason (aka JJay aka Fishing Ninja): [img:27c0a4f9ee]http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4273/xpt8.jpg[/img:27c0a4f9ee] Yes, he scared at least one little girl who turned her kayak around when she saw him. And here's the lunker three pound, 11 ounce bass: [img:27c0a4f9ee]http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/4105/l6gey.jpg[/img:27c0a4f9ee]

Her office is in Hartford, again, instead of Manhattan, so she's home all of the time. Plus, she's taking pottery classes in the morning on Saturdays, so now I'm free whenever I don't have to schlep my daughter somewhere. I still don't like the heavy weekend boat traffic, though. Jason and I had to stop fishing whenever a group of kayakers or canoers passed us, which was pretty frequently in the afternoon. One thing I noticed is that many kayakers and canoers neglected to wear hats or use enough sunscreen. There was a lot of sunburn happening. One guy who was paddling shirtless and in shorts passed us with mud and weeds slathered on his arms and legs. That was definitely a case of too little, too late. Phil
