Local Puddle

Took the wife to be out to a local pond where we've caught some LG's before but I really went there to practice the frog in the pads. First cast into the muck there was an explosion, full out of water bass!!! My first fish on a frog :D Of course this on the first cast has to be good news for the rest of the night... not so much. I caught nothing on top for the rest of the night while she was brought in 4 on finesse worms. Oh well. I was still pretty happy with my frog fish (~1.25lbs) I had fished the same style of worms a couple days before and got nothin... I guess that's the way it goes. Any body have any suggestions for frogs? Its pretty exciting and I'd like to do more. I tried a $1.25 popper I got from the BassPro bargain bin and several rock bass and a largemouth at night with it out on Crystal in Ellington with shortypowers. Other than that my top water experience is very limited I'd be happy to hear some suggestions. Does time of day matter much? I know there are no rules in fishing but just curious.

I know there will be alot of guys who won't agree with me but I have caught some of my best fish on topwater baits most will say they are for night time or overcast but its my experience that even in bright sunlight they can be used. cmorjoe

I love top water. Its my favorite way to fish. The bite is definently best in the VERY early morning and then on again in the late afternoon all the way into dark and after. You can get hits during the day but the bite normally slows down. Sunny days are tough but if the fish are agressive it will work. I have noticed shallow lakes in the summer where the water is very warm can be very productive. If you are somewhere where there is a lot of boat traffic topwater is not your best choice most of the time. My favorite baits: Zara Spooks Spro Forgs(over lillypads) Buzz Baits(Through spotty lillypads) Good luck...I hope this helps.
