Why cant I catch this one fish on this trap

A couple weeks back my buddy kept missing to what I believe was the same fish. Which later when I showed up the same tip up I set the hook and pulling in a decent bass Today I was on the ice and while watching another couple guys who missed a fish on a tip up a few times and eventually caught a nice bass out of the hole... My theory is, most fish that tear the line out (take a lot of line) and are lost on a good hook set may well be a decent size fish. or Could you be missing the dinks and end up having a size fish come through and get hooked? What do you think?

Thanks for the info I am going to BP tomorrow so if you are going out at all try there. If you go I believe there should be 5 of us Other wise I may go to margerie on Sat Huntington Park from what I hear hasnt been that great but, people are catching some decent pickerel pm me back if you are interested on either ball pond tomorrow or margerie on sat.
