Silver Lake Meridan - 3-7-10

Well I'm glad this is the Bass Fishing Reports section and not the Bass Catching Reports section.........
I hit Silver Lake with my 5 year old son yesterday from about 12:30pm until about 2:30pm. The lake was free of ice except for a couple of small spots on the northern tips of the islands where the sun hasn't shone on them much. I forgot my electronics, so I had to ask another angler on the water what the water temps were. The water temps were 40 to 44 degrees depending where on the lake you were. We fished from 2 feet of water to 8 feet of water, I think (no electronics). The air temp was about 55 degrees, and a slight breeze from time to time made it feel a little chilly, but I never put on the winter coat and the sun on my face felt great.
I gave the little guy a wacky rigged senko type bait on the ole tigger pole, and he hauled water all afternoon, but he practiced his casting and by the time we left he had it down pretty well. We fished from the back, towards the launch, along the railroad tracks. I switched over to the windblown point opposite the launch and threw a luckycraft jerkbait and a rattletrap for a few minutes, but the little guy complained and started mumbling about being cold so I moved back out of the wind for him, knowing that's probably where the fish were. But if you want your young kids to grow up loving fishing, then you have to make their trips short and fun, which means warm too, and with lots of snacks and juice boxes. I also threw a texas rigged senko type bait, a jig, a shakey head with a chigger craw on it, and a tube with no takers, I got the skunk. I spoke with 1 angler who was there for 5 hours and caught only 1 pickeral on a jig in 8 foot of water. It was a beautiful afternoon, my little guy had fun, and the motor ran great with old gas in it, and a personal watercraft was just pulling into the launch site when we left, so it was a great afternoon. Maybe not so much for the few boats still on the water when we left, damn personal watercraft..........

Good story.
Weather permitting, next weekend, Im gonna be at some local pond, or standing at my empty slip, with 2 princess poles, and a fresh cup of walmart worms, Juice boxes, fruit chews, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
In a weird sort of way, makes for some of the best fishin trips.
