Subject:
Info boaters should Know!
Message:
Hi All!
Well since the subject of boating has come up -> Here's some info that you ALL should know!
Water is one of the two most powerful forces on earth -> The other is wind.
When combined they can be overwellmingly DANGEROUS :!:
1 gallon of water = 8 lbs.
1 cubic ft. (12 inches x 12" x 12") = 8 gallons of water = 64 lbs.
1 cubic yard (3 ft. x 3' x 3') = 216 gallons of water = 1,728 lbs.
Now waves and swells, depending on how strong and long the wind blows over a stretch of water (also known as the fetch) will travel at between 30 and 60 mph.
So lets say your going into a 3 ft. sea moving @ 30 mph and your doing 30 mph in your boat -> That's now a closing speed of 60 mph.
Your bow dips down into a trough and a 3 ft sea rolls down onto your bow.
That means your being hammered with 1,728 lbs. of water weight PLUS THE VELOCITY of that weight at 60 mph :!:
Pretty heavy and powerful isn't it :!:  -> Being on the water can be very nice -> BUT a very healthy respect for it is absolutely necessary.
One minute it can be "Calm" and the next it can "Rise Up" to try and take your life. For lack of a better explanation "WATER CAN BE A KILLER :!: "
Be safe out there and have all your safety gear on board :!:
Best regards,

Hi JS!
Well your right!
But we use a term in boating and shipping called a "Crash Stop".
It's when your going full ahead then put your engine(s) into full reverse.
This is done during sea trials and depending on the displacement weight of the boat or ship -> You should be able to stop your vessel in 1 1/2 to 2 of your vessels length.
This manuver should only be used if an eminent collision is determined :!:
