Batterson 05/11

I went to Batterson with my eight-foot kayak at about 9:00 this morning. I expected it to be cold, but with low winds. Unfortunately, it was cold, but with a brisk wind. It blew steadily from the far right corner (facing out from the boat launch) to the near left corner of the lake. The conditions were definitely not fit for a paddling fisherman.
Although I should have turned around and gone to a smaller, more sheltered pond, I went out in the surf. Water sloshed into my kayak and, since I had forgotten to bring my waders, I sat in cold water for the rest of the morning. I ended up paddling to the far side of the pond to get out of the wind and caught only two little 10-inch largemouth bass for my trouble. At one point, I drifted over a big largemouth bass that appeared to be guarding a rock in about four feet of water. He looked to be maybe three pounds. But I no longer felt like battling the wind and didn't go after him.
I left before noon and headed for Nod Brook WMA on the Avon/Simsbury border.

It looks like the wind should be down a bit on Batterson today, so I might give it another shot. I actually enjoy fishing from my kayak in the rain; I wear my waders to keep warm and, most importantly, dry.
