Spring Pond 05/21

I spent the morning at Spring Pond today. I know we haven't had too many sunny days yet, but I think I'd rather fish on an overcast day or in a light rain than in full sun. I'm starting to look like the photo-negative of a racoon or, as my kids would say, a fat panda. Anyway, I caught five largemouth bass and one black crappie/calico bass/papermouth bass. It was the first panfish I've hooked out there. I'm especially proud of the first bass I caught. It was 18 inches, 2 lb 14 oz. I saw it feed on something on the surface about 15 feet in front of my kayak and leave a trail of bubbles as it swam about 20 feet past me. I pitched my wacky-rigged unweighted five-inch watermelon Yum worm to the spot where I thought it would be and it took the lure on the third cast. After that, I caught a 14-incher, a 12-incher and another 18-incher that was only 2 lb 2 oz. My last bass was a 13-incher. Other than the 12-incher, which was caught on the northwest shore, I caught the rest of the bass in the cove on the south end. And of those, all but the 13-incher were caught in the middle of the cove. In fact, the 12- and 13-inchers were the only two I caught casting toward the shore. Once again, I was the only boat out there. That's right, BT. There were a couple of shore fishermen fishing with bobbers for panfish, but I didn't talk to them, because it sounded like they were speaking some eastern European language. Oh, and the carp were splashing around all over the place and right next to the shore. They must still be spawning. I think they scared the heck out of some birds, today.
