Burr Pond 05/24
Message:
I went up to Burr Pond in Torrington this morning. It turned out to be a terrific day for a paddle. Unfortunately, I dumped a gallon of water into my kayak near the start and, of course, have not yet gotten waterproof pants, so I got to spend the day feeling like my 1-1/2 year old nephew usually does. I caught 17 fish, but only 7 were largemouth bass. The others were chain pickerel (6) and rock bass (4). I stayed in the two coves on the southwest end of the pond. I tried a dropshot with a finesse worm, but caught only a pickerel with it. I really have to learn how to fish deeper. Almost everything else was caught on a wacky-rigged worm. All of the fish were small. The biggest largemouth bass was 15 inches, 1 lb 5 oz. The biggest pickerel was kielbasa-sized, although most were bratwurst-sized. I had the most fun with the rock bass. I threw a Yum soft plastic frog over the weeds in the bigger cove for about an hour and got only one hit; from a rock bass! If the frog had been alive, the rock bass would have choked to death on it. I guess rock bass are like men; they always think they're bigger than they really are. I'm going to try the northeast end of the pond the next time I head out there. And wear waterproof pants!
