Rainbow Res 6-7-10

Air temp - 70*-75* Water temp - 68*-74* Water clarity - 3-FOW Wind 10mph steady with gusts up to 20mph (from nw to start switching to gusts coming from the south later in the day) ONW at 9am OTW at 8pm Fish caught by me 8-10 with 3 over 16" Fish caught by Kira 8-10 with 3 over 16" I had a lazy start to the day and took my time getting to the water, I also took a lunch break from 1-3pm with little to no fishing going on just mainly some scouting with the depth/fish finder. Some larger bass were holding tight on some steep channel banks in 15' FOW but were hard to fish for in the wind. Started the day off with a healthy looking smallie going about 14" which came within the split second a weightless t-rigged watermelon black fleck 4" senko hit the water. Kira caught a 3lb largie earlier in the morning and 4-5 baby smallies before I showed up. We mostly hit the stumps and lay downs on the west/right side of the res going all the way down to the beach/pylons. The rest of my fish came on varius t-rigged baits with a 1/8th - 1/4 oz sinker. The bass tended to hit everything on the fall or first twitch, little to no chasing of the bait going on except for the smaller fish. I had a major strike on the jig but missed the hookset and lost another 16"+ fish at the boat. Missed some more fish on t-rigged senkos not paying attention and managed to gut hooked a decent sized smallie. Gami hooks have a coating and do not rust very easy if at all, the fish also kept trying to swallow the hook even more as I attempted to pry it out. I got it out with a little blood and was able revive the fish, but saw it roll over a few minutes later. Fish was a good as dead swallowing a 5/0 ewg hook whether I cut the line or pulled it out, not happy about it but what can you do. Best colors seemed to be dark with blues/purples in the deeper water and greens with flake in the shallower water. Water was stained and muddy from the rain, fish we real tight to structure with a few just under cover and most of my fish came on well placed pitches or underhand casts in pockets of cover . Couple fish were caught out on the rocky shallows, and overall had a good mix of smallies to largies. Good too see the fish either survived last years draw down or made it back into the river. No fish were caught between 11am and 3pm, to much sun and wind. We left at 8 after I had enough of the Simsbury fire department testing out 2 boats in the water. They were running 30mph by me within a 50 yard distance of my canoe, shouldn't the F'n fire department know proper etiquette and safety? I had some choice words with them at the launch, and showed a pretty bad attitude. I was asked how the fishing was at this place by what looked to be the ring leader (cheif) and replied "[i:97c0522927]it was awesome till the waves came[/i:97c0522927]" "[b:97c0522927]what[/b:97c0522927]" he replied "[i:97c0522927]The idiots in the fd boats speeding by kayakers and canoes when there is an open expanse to the far left and far right![/i:97c0522927]" I chimed in. I didn't get a response and took that to mean "[b:97c0522927]so what[/b:97c0522927]" And for those of you that think this place has no structure, it is absolutely filled with it. Not just from people placing trees in the water but the other side holds tons of stumps/trees and laydowns as well. If it wasn't for the wind and past 3 days of storms and pressure changes I have no doubt I could have nailed 30-40 fish. And fyi this place is garbage from shore at the launch, no cover/no strucutre and no steep banks. Best fished from a boat during the weekdays to avoid pleasure traffic. Kira has all the pics and I am sure she can back me up on the whole fire department circus that went down in the evening.

DV, my partner and I carry a set of diagonal cutting pliers with us on the water. If you gut hook an occasional fish, you can cut the shank off the hook really deep in the throat and then with needle nose pliers twist and push the hook through and get the rest of the hook out completely in most cases. Most times the fish will swim away with little blood loss, and no throat obstruction. Just food for thought. Sounds like you 2 had a nice day on the water though.

Nice report. Sounds like a good time until the FD decided to screw things up a bit.
