Spring Pond, 9-30-10

A client was nice enough to donate a few buzzbaits to my arsenal today, so I decided to go to Spring Pond after work to see how they would do with this nice little front moving in. I got there about 5:45 with overcast skies and a fair degree of wind. I didn't check the temperature or anything like that. I was throwing a "licorice" (as Phil's daughter would say) Strike King Double Take buzzbait and rolling it in sloooooow. I was fishing along the southern shoreline near the flood pipe (or whatever you call it). I made a few casts along the shore, and then started targeting that little wooden box that's out by there. On the way in, perhaps seven feet from shore, I got my first thrill: [img:74cecc7cef]http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs704.snc4/62486_614570329459_48809708_35010637_2850794_n.jpg[/img:74cecc7cef] It's the most fun in the world when a large bass takes your topwater, but from 7 feet away there's few things better in life :) I was lucky enough that a gentleman was out walking, and he agreed to take the picture. I progressed east along the shoreline and again had another good bass take the buzzbait very near shore. There must be a drop off or something along that bank: [img:74cecc7cef]http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs400.snc4/46294_614570349419_48809708_35010638_1397089_n.jpg[/img:74cecc7cef] Unfortunately I had to take that picture myself. They were nice chunky fish. I'd estimate the first at a little over 4lb and the second perhaps close to 3. They weren't the prettiest ones though as they were covered with black splotches. The second fish busted my buzzbait, so one the way back to the car to get a new one I tried throwing a white spinner bait, but nothing wanted it. I tied on a new buzzbait and managed a smaller bass, borderline legal. All fish were released unharmed after photos. On another note, I saw an absolutely massive white creature in the water. I guess it was a carp? The thing must have been 20-30lbs. Now I understand why there are so many forked sticks along the bank :)

Nice!

I've been wondering what those large black splotches are, too. One of the largemouth bass that I caught at Bantam Lake last Sunday had them. I hope that there isn't some sort of debilitating largemouth bass epidemic spreading around in Connecticut's waters. And, yes, there are a lot of carp in Spring Pond, including a nice orange, white and brown one.
