Nod Brook WMA - Lower Pond 10/08
Message:
I still feel like s#*!, but had to get out on the water and do some fishing this morning. I pedaled the lower pond in my Hobie from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. I launched from the north shore of the pond and threw a black buzzbait for the first couple of hours, mostly because it was already tied on, but also because there are still enough weeds in the north end that a relatively weedless lure was necessary. After a few hits from some small fish, I landed my first buzzbait fish ever: [img:10cffb6c71]http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/8590/2010100811inchlargemout.jpg[/img:10cffb6c71] It was just a little 11 inch largemouth bass. I ended up catching four on the buzzbait. The first two were only 11 inches long and the second two were 12 inches long. Here's one of the keepers: [img:10cffb6c71]http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/3730/2010100812inchlargemout.jpg[/img:10cffb6c71] After I worked my way out of the north end of the pond, I pedaled up toward the south end. I went to within only 50 yards of the south shore, because I got tired of pedaling through the weeds. In the clearer water at the north edge of the weedbed, I caught a couple of largemouth bass with a 1/4 ounce black spinnerbait. I had started throwing a smaller 1/8 ounce white spinnerbait, but after throwing the heavy buzzbait for a couple of hours, I kept casting it straight down into the water. I was able to cast the heavier black one much better. One of the fish was 13 inches long. The other fish was the lunker. It was 16 inches long and weighed one pound, 15 ounces: [img:10cffb6c71]http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/6826/2010100816inchlargemout.jpg[/img:10cffb6c71] I was dying to pedal around the upper pond too, but I'm running a low grade fever, so I came home. I gotta rest up for the weekend.

Great job Phil! You sure had better luck than I did last Tuesday. I got the old skunk-a-roo in the upper pond. Nice to see the water levels up over there. There was a lot, and I mean a lot of baitfish activity in the upper pond. They seem to have been concentrated in the back pocket of that pond over near the houses. Usually it's too low to get over there, but I did and got a few really hard hits, but no fish! Daryl

Hey, Daryl, I was really hoping for some chain pickerel today, but didn't see any. I had one really strong hit that might have been one, but the fish spit the hook before I could see it. I think that a boat would really help you at Nod Brook. Fishing from shore there inspired me to get my first boat. I just [b:070ed7e24b]had[/b:070ed7e24b] to fish further out in the ponds. Phil
