Beseck Lake 10/17

DirtyDawg10 (aka Derek) and I decided to check out Beseck Lake today. My hope was that the mountains to the west would at least partially block what little wind we were supposed to get:

Derek and I had arranged to meet at the boat launch ramp at 6:30 am. He got there early. I got there late. But I joined him on the water by 7:00 am. I had checked the CAES survey map for the lake and decided that I wanted to fish the cove leading to the dam on the southeast side, because it's the deepest part of the lake. There was very little wind when I arrived. The air was cold and the sky was overcast at first, but the clouds cleared out as the wind rose. Later in the morning, we had a west wind that blew steadily at 15 to 20 miles per hour. The water temperature was only 51 degrees, but gradually rose throughout the day to 54 degrees.
After I launched and joined Derek, we headed down the eastern shore toward the cove. Derek trolled a crankbait and quickly landed a black crappie. As we approached the mouth of the cove, he got another hit on the crankbait and landed a decent perch:

Other than the 28 inch, four pound, three ounce perch, the fishing was kind of slow. In addition to the crappie and the perch, Derek also landed an 18 inch chain pickerel and some little largemouth bass. I ended up catching three largemouth bass:
11 inches - wacky five inch green pumpkin/red flake Senko
12 inches - little white crankbait
14 inches - big black spinnerbait with double willow blades
Here's my lunker largemouth:

Beseck is a nice little residential lake. However, all of the fish that we caught (well, other than the crappie) were located in and around the dam cove. I think we'd only go back if we wanted to fish for some more perch.

It was a decent day out there. I arrived at 6:20am and was on the water by 6:30am. I tried some topwater stuff but didn't have any luck. When Phil showed we decided to head to the channel so I trolled a silver crank and first picked up this crappie

and then the perch that Phil mentioned...again trolling the same crankbait. Here's a couple more pics.

In the channel I fished a few of the docks and picked up this 18" pickerel on the crank.

Trolled the crank again and picked up this tiny 7" LMB just North of the channel
[img:431cbe2007]http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6809/dscf0014g.jpg[/img:431cbe2007]
and then picked up this 10" LMB under a tree in the channel again throwing the crankbait.

I didn't have any luck with anything but the crankbait today. Here's a few random pics of the lake scenery.

Wow Dawg nice fish! Looks like you fellas had a great day even with the wind. Is that perch related to the Pike family of fish? I've not caught a Pike yet so I'm kinda uneducated on them. You guys really give some awesome reports, thanks for letting me get my fishing fix today since I was outta town.
