New from simsbury

Hey, my name is Jon, and I am a jazz trombone/education major at Uconn but I will be living back home in Simsbury when I graduate this year. I have been fishing seriously for about a year but just joined this forum this week. I have been reading a lot of posts and decided I really need a kayak. I have a budget ($500), and I am very tall- I'm 6'7", so I need something that I know i can be comfortable in. Before I go out and try some out for myself, does anyone have any suggestions from an angler's perspective? Thanks, Jon

Welcome, Jon I would look around on Craigs list. A buddy just bought a 17' Kayak from there the only thing is he's not 6'7'. He got a good end of season price. approx $600. I know one thing try all styles sit-on one with a cockpit, and if all else fails. Try a canoe there are so many styles prices etc. Unfortunatly i don't know many folkes as tall as you. Hope it helps. Tim

Boy, Jon, that's a tall order! Seriously, though, you'd probably be looking for a sot (i.e., sit on top) kayak, instead of a sink (i.e., sit in kayak). Like Tim said, you'd have to try them out in person first, but there are tons from which to choose. Since it's the end of the season and you live in Simsbury, you should stop by Collinsville Canoe and Kayak in Collinsville and Eastern Mountain Sports (i.e., EMS) in Avon, in addition to Dick's Sporting Goods in Canton. EMS recently had a weekend sale where all of its kayaks were 20 percent off and it has some really nice fishing kayaks, including some nicely priced demo boats. I'm looking forward to its next sale. Black Friday, perhaps? I'm not a huge fan of Pelican kayaks, even though I own one with which I'm perfectly satisfied, Someone else on this site has referred to it as my "floating blue torture device". However, Costco has a 13 foot Pelican Castaway 130 fishing sot on sale for $599, and with its 100 percent satisfaction forever guarantee, it might be worth trying because you could always return it. BTW, my 16 year old son is also a boner, ahem, trombonist, I mean. :D Phil
