Finally got out on open water!

I head that avery pond was thawed so me and my pops took a ride down there for are first open water outing. My dad works 3rd shift so it was a little on the late side by the time we got there but we managed to get on the water at 3:45 and were off at 6:45. I started out throwing a 1/4 oz jig but that didn't last too long because I kept getting sludgy weed much on my jig, so i decided to throw the lucky strike pointer and about five casts i get a good hit so i set the hook and a decent fight later i pule in a 20in slime dart... yeah big disappointment! It wasn't the greatest day but i did manage two largemouth one about 1lb and the other 1.5lb on the jerk bait and dad got the skunk but it was a nice day to get out anyway.

Was there any ice, or was it completely open? Looking to hit Pachaug and it is near there. Thanks.
