Newport rhode island fluke SUNDAY 7/9/07
Message:
Headed out on the frances fleet again today, this time fishing waters btwn 40-60ft outta Newport. It was a light crowd today which was a surprise. We got to the fishing grounds around 9am which I believe was right around low tide. Right off the bat, Cpt. Mike put us into a nice pick of fish. I started off using the usual 2 hook tandem rig w/ white bucktail mylars and throwing 8oz right from the get go. I was using some mackeral strips w/ squid strip on both hooks today and the fluke were pretty aggressive to the point we ran out of mackeral pretty quick. First drop yielded a double header w/in 5 mins of dropping in. 1 keeper in the bag, 1 short (18"). I had a feeling it was going to be a successful day. 8) To make a long story short(er), I had my limit before 11a.m. ...a new personal best for me. I decided to switch to whole squid and go for doormats and got a couple decent fish. The biggest of the day (for me) was 23.5" and 6lbs 4oz on the boga. I had another couple in the 4-5lb range as well. All totalled, I ended the day (unfortunately b/c the fishing got red hot) with 8 keeper fluke 1 keeper seabass 6 shorty fluke including one at 19 7/8" :x and 1 baby seabass which devoured my whole squid  Our group of 4 totalled 20 keeper fluke and 1 seabass which turned out to be around 30lbs of filet which I might add made for a tasty dinner tonight. Mike and the mate. As always, we had a great time on the Frances fleet. For those of us who don't have our own boats, it's nice to find a great boat to fish on with a great crew. They always put us on the fish and make the trip to Rhodie worth the drive.
