Can't Catch a Fish in Salmon River

Hey Guys, New here, so forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this topic. I know very little about fishing, but I've gone maybe 20 or so times in the last couple years to Salmon River. I have a cheap $20 pole from Walmart and have used a lot of different lures and bait from little fake grasshoppers to big rooster tails to marshmallows to corn. In the 20 or so times I've gone, I've gone one 4" salmon. I can't seem to catch any trout, but I see other people catching trout there all the time. Any help is appreciated. Also, as a side note, I'd like to learn to fly fish this summer, so any suggestions with that is appreciated as well. Thanks. - JC

JC, Next time I go to Salmon River you should come along. I will probably be fishing in in 2-3 weeks. I can show you a few pointers.

mobydick, the salmon river is loaded with fish and if people are catching around you then you should be paying attention to what they are using and how they are fishing. Part of it just may be that you don't have a good read on the water and how to present your offering and you always have to give the fish what they want. You can try and force them to take what you are offering, but it's always easier to offer them what they want. Also trout feed the bulk of their time sub surface and try to expend very little energy when feeding so getting your bait or lure to the correct depth and in the feeding lane is a must. There are times when fish feed aggressively and you can do know wrong but most times they are lying in wait on the bottom and near struture to break up the fast current and when feeding spend little energy. One of the things you should think about is taking a DEP fishing class [url]http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2222&q=320736&depNav_GID=1630[/url] or hook up with a local fishing club like Trout unlimited or the SRRA. If you are serious about fly fishing, my local fly shop JT's Fly Shop in union ( [url]http://www.jtsflyshop.com/[/url]) offers many classes include a into to fly fishing class and it's usually free. There are other shops that offer the same type of classes but I don't know where you are located so ask around at your local bait and tackle shop.
