Lakeville in a downpour 6-14-11

Hit Lakeville today for my first trip of the year there. Took a fellow teacher from school we both used a personal day. We were on the water at 8:00 and off by 4:00. It rained all day except the last 40 minutes, some were torrential downpours. Knew the forecast ahead of time so came prepared. Water temps were only 69. Spent most of our time in anywhere from 8-15 feet. We used three four different baits (drop shot zoom black grape worm, Skinny Dipper swim bait in white trash, a white super fluke and a wacky rigged black neon fishstix). We got fish on the first three. His first bass came in about 12' on the drop shot. It was the biggest bass of the day topping out at 2#10 oz. Here's a pic. It was so large that I couldn't get my hand around its shoulders for a picture. Teeth were too impressive to attempt a gill hold for the picture. Not interested in getting bit after only 20 minutes of fishing. Seemed like we were alternating all day long. Twenty minutes into the day two fish in the rain. We were encouraged! It stayed good until 10:30 adding another 4 fish between us. All on the drop shot all in that 10-15 foot zone. When the storm picked up the fishing slowed down. From 11:00 to 2:00 rain was steady and we had some significant downpours which forced the rest of the boats, I think there were three, off the lake. During the slowdown we had a brief pit stop and lunch. We continued to fish the weed-edge without much success, When the wind died down and the sun broke through we moved shallower and broke out the swim bait, fluke and wacky worm. We around and over top the weeds more than the edges, typically 6-10 feet. We added four more in the remaining two hours. With light rain on and off. Including this nice bass in about 8 feet on the Super Fluke. Jay hasn't done a lot of boat fishing so he was very excited to get out and enjoyed catching some nice fish. He's a great young guy and very enjoyable to be out fishing with. Looks like I've got a partner anytime I need one all summer.

Hey, Pappy! After all of your drop shot reports, I'm finally starting to use it. What kind of hook do you use for the finesse worms?

Drop shot is by far my favorite technique and you can throw it just about any where. Followed by spider grubs. I use the stand out hooks in red or nickle for drop shotting. . I use them because they are much easier to tie. The other popular choice is Gamakatsu's drop shot hook.
