My First Keeper Striper
Message:
Well let me tell you, it hasn't been an easy road for me to get my first keeper striper. I do not have a boat and finding a fellow fisherman who would be willing to take me along fishing with him has been difficult.
It has taken me three years of various weekend fishing for stripers to finally catch my first keeper. I have caught tons of schoolies and blues in the process. It hasn't been for a lack of trying either. I have tried fishing from shore multiple times at successful places such as the DEP docks in Old Lyme, The boat launch area in Old Saybrook and a few chartered trips on the Hel-Cat (caught all blues).
Well this year I was able to meet a fellow fisherman who was willing to take a chance and take me out on his boat. The first trip we tried for fluke and stripers but only caught fluke. My first time fluke fishing and I caught a bunch of fluke, but all shorties. No Bass on the boat that day.
This past Saturday, I went out again with him and two other guys. We left out of Westbrook and fished LIS. Our goal was to target fluke first, hopeully fill the boat up with keepers, and then move on to catching striped bass.
We were heading to the captain's fluke fishing grounds and we noticed a lot of birds working the surface. Other boats also were keying in on this and lots of guys starting throwing top water lures. While we were a small distance away from the action, I decided to try and jig for some stripers and avoid the blues by working 5 feet from the bottom. Well it finally paid off and I landed a 32 inch fat striper. I was super excited, but I think the captain was even more ecstactic for me, and he was happy he was able to help me catch it. After that I catch two monster sized blues, before another blue bit off the line.

Soon after the birds flew away and the bite stopped so we moved onto fluke fishing. I caught 19 fluke, but all shorties and the boat only landed 1 keeper fluke.
It was a great day of fishing and I thank the captain and sites like these for restoring my interest in fishing again.
