Farmington River 07/10

DirtyDawg10 (aka Derek), mep21 (aka Mark) and I decided to fish the Farmington River from Curtiss Park in Simsbury in the morning. We were on the water from about 5:45 am to 11:45 pm. It was sunny and cool, with very light winds. Although it might not have been ideal fishing weather, it was beautiful kayaking weather for sure. The water level is only slightly higher than normal and the water is very stained. We decided to paddle/pedal upriver to just past the Route 315 bridge and drift back down to the dead end branch of the river that runs back toward Curtiss Park. I decided to troll a yellow perch patterned Rapala SSR-5 and almost immediately landed a little cannibalistic yellow perch. The little sucker got two hooks in the top of its mouth and one on the bottom. I [b:3508836768]HATE[/b:3508836768] treble hooks! :x We fished above and below the bridge for a while, but I landed the only fish with my five inch wacky rigged Senko, which was a short smallie: [img:3508836768]http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/8288/img0732qf.jpg[/img:3508836768] We fished both banks and most of the laydowns as we drifted down to the dead end branch, but didn't get any hits. Mark and Derek were definitely getting pretty discouraged. After we entered the dead end branch, I landed a couple of short largemouth bass with the wacky Senko: [img:3508836768]http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5143/img0733p.jpg[/img:3508836768] [img:3508836768]http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/2766/img0734t.jpg[/img:3508836768] A little while later, Mark landed a couple of largemouth bass with a Baby Brush Hog. And then, [i:3508836768][b:3508836768]finally[/b:3508836768][/i:3508836768], Derek landed a six inch monster of a largemouth with a wacky Senko. When we reached the end of the dead end branch, I landed a chunky keeper largemouth, again with the wacky Senko: [img:3508836768]http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/2231/img0735c.jpg[/img:3508836768] It weighed a surprising one and a quarter pounds. Derek couldn't take much more frustration, so we double timed it off of the water and headed into Simsbury for lunch and some icy cold drinks. Although Derek had to head home, Mark and I weren't ready for our weekend fishing extravaganza to end, so we headed off to Lake Basile for more.
