Striper Fishing Watch Hill and Fishers Island 7.15.11
Message:
Went out from Mystic at 4:30 Friday morning (full moon) to try for stripers on and around the Watch Hill reef area. Fished with my buddy til about 3 :30 with a 1.5 hr break for lunch without a hit. We started with eels (I used a tiny eel and he had one that was over a foot) for the first few hours then proceeded to throw everything in the boat at them. Around 11:30 i switched to a small japanese style flutter spoon and decided to try ripping that of the bottom repeatedly (I know from experience that this works on sluggish LMB at least) and quickly hooked up with a 13.5 inch porgy. There was a 30-35 inch striper chasing it as I brought it up, I let it take a swipe but it quickly swam away after a few seconds. Overall a very slow day, I think I'll finally learn that the full moon can be your best friend or your worst enemy when fishing. The bite might have been better last night tonight or tomorrow night, but we went out and threw some poppers and black swimmers on thursday night and had no interest as well.

the fishers island area is generally pretty good. if i remember correctly there is a reef just off fishers that i remember alot of guys drifting and jigging on. we found the reef as it was loaded with boats. when i had my hobie i went and anchored off the island and laid some chunk bait out. We ended up getting some really nice blues that day and i also got my 1st and only sea trout. I will show you the picture of it. It was a big seatrout. keep at it they are out there somewhere. wish i had the hobie at times so i could hit the salt again. see you soon.
