Safe for swimming in the Housi?
Message:
Planning on going out Saturday and Monday and we'll certainly stop the boat along the way for a swim. You think it's safe to swim in the housatonic? I was concerned about all the waste treatment plants along the river but I figure now with the river flow all that garbage should be washed well into the sound.
Should I be concerned with bacteria levels for my children? How's the sound? Anyone been in it to see if it's still chocolate soup?
Thanks.

If anything, higher water flows make rivers worse, not better, when it comes to pollution. Sediment gets stirred up, and treatment plants sometimes get overloaded and have to discharge untreated effluent. I wouldn't throw my kids in there. You might feel differently about yours.

Hi!
NO! - NO! - NO!
All major rivers will not be safe for days yet to come :!:
Lots of water from up north still heading south.
Housy is a very long river and will run high and rolly for more days to come!
PLUS, the Housy is loaded with PCB's and all this raging water will stir the bottom sediment up.
Do not think you and your children want to be swiming in PCB laced water.
Oh! And never eat any fish caught in the Housy because of the PCB's!
Efluent and debris will be also coming down for some time.
Phils absolutely correct -> PLAY it SAFE :!: -> Stay off and out of the rivers.
We just had one 46 year man lose his life for being "very stupid" by going out on a raging river in a canoe in Bristol, Ct.
