Hi pP1,
The 3 bait shops here in the NW corner aren't going to carry any till ice fishing season, if they can get them.
Best they can get right now is mediun heavy shinners.
They're not even sure if they may carry them because of the cost.
Pike bait is going to be very expensive this year. (Well over $1.00 per fish)
If you have knowledge of where to catch goldies or suckers -> ("You may want to keep that info to yourself")...... (also catch some now and freeze them).
I keep getting calls from guys that know my next door neighbor has a small spring feed old mill fire pond chocka-blocked full of goldies....all sizes (I give him fresh caught fish and he lets me take all the goldies I want).
Can't sell them as that would be unethical to catch and sell goldies from his pond ----> I'm not even about to screw that agreement up!
Other than that -> see where you can find a store that sells canned Mackerel, or canned Sardines only in oil to use as cut bait.
Good luck in your search!

Don't bother going to CT Outfitters in Wethersfield (they usually have them). I was there this weekend and they are trying to sell large shiners (4"-5" at best) as pike bait for over $1 each! Pike bait are (or should be) juvenile golden shiners. They should be gold in color with a lateral line that dips downward and be around 6"-7" long. The guy filled my bucket and I made him take them back. I told him they weren't pike bait and I wasn't paying that price for them. This is the 2nd time they have done this to me and the first time I was on the water before I realized. I will not be going to CT Outfitters again, that's for sure!
Mikes Bait and Tackle in Preston is the only other place that I know of who always has them and they are BIG, too. Other than that you have to find a place to catch your own bait. That's what I do.
