Black Blotches on Bass
Message:
I have seen a lot of fish this year with black blotches on their skin. On the mouth anal fin tail and other areas as well. I did a little googling and have read a bunch of opinions but nothing concrete. Some people say its bruising some say it's genetic some think it only happens on mishandled c n r fish. Anyone here have an opinion on the matter? I'm talking about this stuff ... Pigmintation blah, blah, blah. Seems as this is becoming more common starting around 5 years ago. Doesn't seem to be harming the fish though. Camo-bass.

Bass Blotch
Message:
I've read that "bass blotch" is a pigmentation issue (i.e.., hyperpigmented melanosis), too, and that scientists still don't know what causes it. However, I've also read that it can go away over time. In any case, I haven't read that anyone believes it's harmful to either fish or people who eat them. Here's a decent article that discusses it: http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/articles/T205.htm I've caught quite a few largemouth bass with bass blotch, especially in Spring Pond. It makes it very easy to tell when you've recaught a fish.
