Quaddick 2/1, first fish of '12 finally!
Message:
Hit the same spot on Quaddick yesterday afternoon, Baker Rd. around the bridge. There was less ice than when I was there 12/27! Tried out an old johnson silver minnow (spoon) that my dad gave me a while ago, I heard they are popular for pike. Used a green/white ribbontail worm as a trailer. Finally managed to catch my first fish of 2012, another small pickerel.
Shortly before the pickerel, I did have what appeared to be a huge pike follow the my lure all the way to the bridge, and then turn around at the surface and head back into the depths! So they are there, I just need to figure out how to catch them. I should really just take everyone’s advice and buy some big pike minnows at the bait shop! Last spring I caught a ton of creek chub in one of my carp fishing spots (on my carp bait), so I might try them out as live bait too. Hmmm carp fishing Saturday, pike fishing on Sunday? Sounds like a good weekend to me, we need a few more of these 60 degree days!!

Nice. Bluegill Terminator always says that creek chubs are the best northern pike bait.
No good ice in the northeast corner, huh?

Phil that’s great to hear! They annoyed the heck out of me last spring while trying to carp fish, now I can put them to good use :D.
No solid ice around here at all… I posted a good ice report a few weeks ago for this exact lake/spot, it didn’t last long though with all the rain and warm weather. Quaddick is probably ~40% open water from what I could see yesterday, and the remaining ice is pretty thin and slushy. The pond where I carp fish was ~75% open water on Tuesday…
