Squantz Pond 03/04
Message:
I wasn't planning to post a report because metalfish (aka Ian) led this expedition, but I guess that he's too busy to do it. Ian felt the need to dunk his junk in some freezing cold water, so TurtleKiss (aka Kira), pikePERSUADER1 (aka Dan) and I tagged along to watch. When we arrived at the boat launch ramp in Squantz Pond State Park at 10:45 am, the sky was overcast and the air temperature was around 40 degrees. There was just a slight north breeze when we arrived, but it still felt [i:074dc012f1][b:074dc012f1]cccold[/b:074dc012f1][/i:074dc012f1]! The pond was drawn down about five feet: [img:074dc012f1]http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/6540/img1668n.jpg[/img:074dc012f1] The water was so low that we drove down the ramp onto what's normally the bottom of the pond to unload our boats: [img:074dc012f1]http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/1926/img1662cropped.jpg[/img:074dc012f1] Kira pedaled The Other Woman, Dan paddled La Calabaza and I paddled El Habaņero, while Ian rowed and flippered around in his pontoon float: [img:074dc012f1]http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/5763/img1667cropped.jpg[/img:074dc012f1] We got on the water at 11:00 am and off by 2:00 pm. While we were on the water, the air temperature rose only a little to 43 degrees and the wind began to blow from the north at a steady 10 miles per hour, which made a cold day feel even colder. The water was [i:074dc012f1][b:074dc012f1]waaay[/b:074dc012f1][/i:074dc012f1] colder than I thought it would be; it hovered between 37 and 38 degrees the entire time we were out there. It was also murky; I could see down only a couple of feet. We stayed fairly close to the ramp, because Ian had the equivalent of about 1/1,000th of a horsepower's propulsion. To his credit, he stayed in the water for a full three hours! Unfortunately, none of us got even a nibble while we were out there, even though Kira threw a rig she made that I like to call The Babymaker: [img:074dc012f1]http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/2618/img1671cropped.jpg[/img:074dc012f1] Kira marked some fish just off of the bottom in 20 to 25 feet of water with the finder on The Other Woman, but we really weren't prepared to fish at that depth. Dan and I tried dropshotting, but got nothing. We heard later from NickP (aka Nick) that fish had been biting non-moving lures next door in Candlewood Lake. On a more positive note, we finally got some Bass at the Candlewood Grille, although they came from a menu, instead of the pond: [img:074dc012f1]http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/3356/img1673cropped.jpg[/img:074dc012f1]
